TEACHER’S PET - Welcome Wallace

The first few days in a new school is a daunting experience.

Separated from your family and here you are in totally new surroundings and with people you may never have seen before.

But one such school beginner has already made lots and lots of new friends and has become so popular escapes homework.

Let me introduce to you to Wallace.

The three and a half year labrador-retriever mix, has joined Sacred Heart Secondary Clonakilty as its official Community Dog.

Known for his gentle nature, Wallace has quickly become a beloved figure, offering emotional support to both students and staff.

Wallace’s primary caretaker, Clare Shorten, an SNA at the school, ensures he receives excellent care both on and off the school grounds. In addition, Kevin O’Sullivan, the school’s caretaker, and Kara O’Callaghan, a SEN teacher, are also trained handlers who assist Wallace in fulfilling his responsibilities throughout the school day. Together, they ensure Wallace’s routine includes interacting with students, participating in group activities, and offering comfort during stressful moments.

School principal Ms. Brosnan praised Wallace’s impact, saying, “Wallace has been an incredible addition to our school community. His calming presence has made a noticeable difference, particularly for students who may be dealing with anxiety or stress.” Vice Principal Brendan Walsh echoed her sentiments, noting, “He’s a real source of comfort, especially during difficult times. We’re grateful to have him here.

As part of the wellbeing initiative, Wallace has his own dedicated space where he can rest and recharge between sessions. His involvement in classroom activities, one-on-one support, and group sessions is part of Sacred Heart’s broader commitment to promoting mental health and emotional wellbeing.

The school is eager to see how Wallace will continue to enrich the lives of its students and staff in the years to come, making Sacred Heart Secondary School a shining example of innovative approaches to wellbeing in education.
